Boreal forests store roughly two-thirds of the world's forest carbon.
That carbon is increasingly exposed as rapid warming drives longer, more intense wildfire seasons across Alaska, Canada, and the wider circumpolar north. These fires release carbon back into the atmosphere, and risk accelerating the loss of ancient carbon that has been locked in permafrost soils for millennia.
We can steward these forests for climate, ecosystems, and human health.
Through North Fire, we’re accelerating the science and testing what works on the ground in communities across the north.

North Fire is a partnership launched by Alaska Venture Fund, The POLIS Project on Ecological Governance, and Woodwell Climate Research Center.
Together, we will test the feasibility, effectiveness, and scalability of wildfire stewardship for climate and ecological benefit. We will expand the North Fire network to include researchers, fire managers, community partners and funders, to drive this important work toward scale.
